MEET THE WINES

SHIRAZ

Shiraz is known for being far more fruit-driven than Syrah, and is famous for its lashings of blackberries and high alcohol content. It’s Shiraz that tends to show sweeter notes of liquorice, raisins and chocolate, with vanilla and coconut added into the mix if it’s then aged in new oak.

Shiraz is the perfect accompaniment for steak, roast beef, smoked brisket, and hard cheeses with good acidity. It has plenty of depth and weight, so you need to make sure you’re matching it with a food of the same heaviness.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

There are consistent notes you’ll find across the board however. We’re mainly talking intense and unctuous black fruit flavours of blackcurrant, blackberries and cherry. If you love a fruit explosion with your wines, then you’ll absolutely love this variety. Cabernet Sauvignon develops prominent savoury notes including cedar, tobacco, chocolate, mint and eucalyptus.

With plenty of tannin, Cabernet Sauvignon stands up well to big meaty dishes. Rib-eye steak and frites, lamb tagine with minted couscous, cheese boards with Camembert and Gorgonzola, and even bitter dark chocolate are all fantastic pairings we’d recommend.

MEET THE WINES

SAUVIGNON BLANC

This is one of the few grapes that is almost instantly recognisable on the nose, even for the newest of wine buffs! Primary fruit flavours are citrus-led with lime as well as green apple, passion fruit, peach and distinctive gooseberry coming to the fore.

For the citrus-led examples, try zingy green salads with feta, salmon, lemon sole, or even a classic fish and chips. A more aromatic and grassy Sauvignon will work with stronger flavours such as asparagus or fragrant herbal dishes.

MERLOT

Flavours associated with Merlot include plum, blackberries, cherries and red fruits. Alternatively, you may experience the sensation of tucking into a delicious fruit-cake with chocolatey notes. Barrel- aged Merlot, you’ll find, starts to develop sweet spice notes of vanilla and clove along with a wonderful velvety texture.

Being well-rounded, medium-bodied, low acidity and easy drinking, Merlot can be partnered with a whole host of dishes. Beef hotpot, slow roasted lamb, roast duck are all brilliant options. For the cheese lovers out there, try a Merlot and blue cheese combo, like Gorgonzola!

MEET THE WINES

CHARDONNAY

Warmer climate Chardonnay has more prominent stone fruit notes of peach, whilst the warmest regions can produce tropical notes of mango and banana. Oak ageing adds butter and vanilla notes often associated with higher-end French wines.

Its most common pairing is with white meats such as roast chicken and turkey.

PINOTAGE

Pinotage is packed full of black fruit flavours, although younger wines can showcase a lovely red berry hint. Older vines produce vino that’s incredibly rich, spicy and savoury in flavour, resulting in complex flavours of tobacco, smoke, leather and lashings of liquorice! The earthiness comes through on the nose, while dark berry flavours come to life on the palate.

Rich, meaty dishes that’ll complementthe wine’s texture. Great meat pairings are venison, duck, barbecued meat and hearty stews, while the perfect cheese match is a nice strong goat’s cheese.

CHENIN BLANC

A true South African varietal with an appealing light straw colour. Tropical notes follow through to the palate with hints of stone fruit and vanilla, finishing with a well- balanced crisp acidity.

Enjoy with crisp summer salads, gourmet open sandwiches and a thyme and garlic infused roast chicken.
